- -my art biography- My name is Nan Wei, born in Beijing, China, in 1994, I obtained a Bachelor Degree in Art and Design from Beijing University of Technology in 2016. During my university years, an opportunity for an exchange study at Saga University in Japan inspired my interest in lacquer art and woodwork. After graduation, I decided to study in Japan to broaden my horizons. I am inspired by the sculptural lacquer creation in Japan which demonstrates that lacquer art could be a progressive medium. After earning my Masters Degree from the Graduate School of Regional Design in Art and Economics at Saga University in 2019, I am currently pursuing my Doctoral Degree at the Graduate School of Arts at Kyoto City University of Arts. I have received numerous awards while studying in Japan. Notable ones include the Cultural Foundation Prize at the 67th Japan Saga Prefectural Art Exhibition in 2017, the Student Prize at the 57th Japan Crafts Exhibition in 2018, the Encouragement Prize at the 59th Japan Crafts Exhibition in 2020. The most recent ones in 2021 are the Special Prize at the Cheongju International Craft Competition in Korea and the Best Award at the Art Meets Architecture Competition AAC in Japan.
